Senate leaders prepare for final week
The 2008 legislative session is drawing to a close with the curtain set to come down this Friday at 6 p.m. And, Republican Senate leaders are hoping to complete work on a number of important bills during the remaining five days. Senator Charlie Shields (R-St. Joseph), the Senate Majority Floor Leader, says one of the important pieces of legislation is an economic development bill. Shields says the General Assembly also needs to finish legislation on immigration reform and property tax reform ... and is also looking at a voter photo identification bill, which has already cleared the House, and awaits Senate action.

Tornadoes kill at least 12 in SW Missouri
At least 12 people are dead after tornadoes touched down near Seneca in southwest Missouri. The 12 are among almost two dozen people killed in severe weather that struck Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. In Missouri, at least 19 people in Newton County were hospitalized as a result of the twisters, which destroyed or damaged homes and businesses. The extent of all the injuries is not known. Rescue crews are digging through the rubble of destroyed structures as they search for more victims. The National Weather Service reports at least eight tornadoes were spawned in Oklahoma with several blasting into Missouri.

Bombardier: it's not just for Kansas city
The focus is on Kansas City, but the Bombardier Aerospace tax credit package could benefit your area in one ay or another. Creators of the tax credit program pronounce it unlike any other economic development tool in the nation or maybe in the world. It provides millions but it also says no tax credits will be given until people are on the job..and the company has to pay back all of that money over time, with a five percent interest. Although more than two-thousand jobs would be created at Kansas City International airport, thousands more could be created throughout Missouri because suppliers will want to set up shop within a day's delivery time from the factory. Senate sponsor Charlie Shields says this concept is a template for other parts of the state and for cities' own economic development programs. He says this kind of tax credit program can be repeated in other places. Although legislators think Missouri's chances are 50-50 at worst...and maybe as good as 75-25 that Bombardier will build its factory here, they think the state will still win if the company decides to stay in Montreal. They say this kind of tax credit structure can be used for the next mega-industrial development project anywhere in Missouri and if local communities want to base their own business development tax-incentive packages on the state structure, they are welcome to.

Voter photo ID passes House, heads to Senate with one week left
A United States Supreme Court ruling that upheld an Indiana law requiring voters to display photo identification has breathed new life into the effort in Missouri. The House has approved a constitutional amendment that would require voters to have a photo ID to cast a ballot. Republican lawmakers are pushing a constitutional amendment, because the Missouri Supreme Court held that a law passed two years ago violated the Missouri, not the United States, constitution. This issue sharply divides Republicans and Democrats. Debate on the House floor grew sharp and harsh. Democrats accused Republicans of attempting to suppress the vote among traditional Democratic constituencies. The measure passed on a party-line vote. The top Democrat in the House, Rep. Paul LeVota of Independence, lashed out at Rep. Stanley Cox, the Sedalia Republican sponsoring the measure. "Name one person who has voted under the wrong name," LeVota challenged Cox, shouting, "Name one!" A couple of Republicans referred to the conviction of workers for the liberal activist group, ACORN, convicted of voter fraud for gathering false names during a voter registration drive in Kansas City. Democrat dismissed that example, noting that the ACORN workers were registering voters, not casting fraudulent votes. Republican Jim Lembke of St. Louis tired of hearing Democrats say that requiring a voter to display photo identification harms the sacred right to vote. "Just as sacred as the right to vote," Lembke said during floor debate, "is the ability that we safeguard that vote." He and other Republicans say that every fraudulent vote cancels out a legitimate vote. The resolution, HCS HJR 48 , moves to the Senate with a week left in the session.

Senate approves utility regulation bill
The Senate has given final approval to HB 2279 - a bill that changes the laws regarding utility regulations - a portion of which deals directly with a power company that got into trouble over the construction of a plant in Cass County. Aquila failed to obtain the necessary permits to build its power plant and has bee ordered, by the courts, to tear down the facility. Debate over this part of the much larger bill went on for several hours in the Senate, with several members expressing concerns that the General Assembly - in effect - let Aquila off the hook. Senator Victor Callahan (D-Independence) was among those who made it clear he did not like the proposal, but questioned the wisdom in tearing down a plant that the company would have to rebuild elsewhere and could pass on the new construction costs to ratepayers. The bill passed the Senate with some modifications and now goes back to the House, where it originated. The two versions must be reconciled before the legislation can be sent to Governor Matt Blunt.

Royals bats sluggish again in loss to O's
The Royals bats continued to struggle and come up with big hits as the Royals lose a rain delayed game with Baltimore 6-5. Brett Tomko fought through a rain delay and left during the sixth inning with his team trailing 5-1. But the Royals started hitting in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3. The Royals even had the tying run on first when Tony Pena swung at the first pitch and bounced back to the mound to end the inning. In the seventh, the Royals had runners on first and third with no outs. Cleanup hitter Billy Butler struck out. No. 5 hitter Mark Grudzielanek was then called out on strikes. And finally, former cleanup hitter Jose Guillen grounded out meekly to second, allowing the Orioles to escape with a 6-4 lead. Brian Bannister looks to end his personal four game losing streak in the series finale Sunday afternoon.

Ludwick rescues Cardinals
If you think the Cardinals have issues with Jason Isringhausen as the closer, they're not alone. The Brewers have issues with their shut down guy in Eric Gagne as well. He surrended the game winning, two out, two run single by Ryan Ludwick that gave the Cardinals a 5-3 win. Both Gagne and Isringhausen have now blown five saves, with is tied for first among the NL "loser"board. It really should have never gotten to a close game situation for the Brewers. Twice they had the bases loaded against Cardinal relievers and couldn't blow the game open in a game the Cardinals were leading 3-0. The Cardinals bullpen is starting to show kinks in the armour. Kyle McClellan came on in relief of Joel Pineiro and walked in two runs, but escaped with a 3-2 lead when the Brewers couldn't deliver two out hits. Then Russ Springer walked two and gave up a hit in an innings worth of work and the Brewers couldn't score. Without Ludwick's, clutch hitting, something that has been saving the Cardinals, they would have been looking at their fourth loss. After getting off to a franchise best 18 wins in April, I think the Cardinals are quickly descending back to earth while the Cubs have handled the top team in the NL, the Arizona Diamondbacks in two games.

Former Tiger Scherzer pitches well against Cubs
Here's a great article from Mike Bauman on former Missouri Tiger pitcher Max Scherzer. He pitched six innings against a tough Cubs lineup, and gave up nothing more than one unearned run on five hits and one walk, while striking out six. Bauman is a writer for MLB.com.

Missouri Western eliminated in MIAA baseball tournament
The Fort Hays State Tigers held off a late rally by the Missouri Western Griffons and claimed a 4-3 victory in an elimination game at the MIAA Baseball Tournament Saturday afternoon (May 10) at Community America Ballpark. Missouri Western finished its season with an overall record of 25-24 with the defeat. Fort Hays State's junior first baseman Dusty Washburn had a pair of solo home runs in the game, the first with two outs in the opening frame and second with one out in the sixth. His shots bookended a two-run shot by junior catcher A.J. Levanduski in the second inning to stake the Tigers to a 4-0 lead. Western was limited to three hits in the first seven innings -- all singles -- off of Tigers sophomore RHP Matt Augustine (5-7). The Griffons finally broke loose in the top of the eighth, but a mistake early in the frame may have cost them a chance for at least a tie. Junior leftfielder Adan Mercado led off with a double down the rightfield line, but was picked off soon after by Augustine. Senior second baseman Matt Radel then fanned on three pitches to quickly put Western in a two-out hole. Sophomore catcher Cory Elmendorf drew a walk and went to third on a single to right-center by junior centerfielder Troy Landi. Senior third baseman Adam Carolan then spoiled the shutout with a double to left-center to bring home both base runners and make it 4-2. Senior right fielder Ben Toedebusch then doubled home Carolan to make it 4-3 and chase Augustine from the game for sophomore RHP Donnie Moore. Senior first baseman Tommy Bone stepped to the plate and stroked a single to left field. Junior Drew Loller, pinch running for Toedebusch, was thrown out at home with the potential tying run. Western had another chance to tie the game in the ninth when Moore hit junior shortstop Andrew Elmendorf to lead off the frame. That's when FHSU brought in junior left-handed pitcher Eric Gilliland, and he promptly pounced on an attempted bunt by junior pinch hitter Joey Pilatti and pegged the lead runner at second. Gilliland then fanned Mercado and induced a liner to second by junior pinch-hitter Greg Euker to get his first save of the year. Western senior right-handed pitcher Everett Saul (8-4) went the distance for the Griffons, allowing eight hits and four runs with six strikeouts and no walks, taking the loss. Augustine fanned a career high 11 and walked one in 7 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. Along with Washburn, freshman catcher Ryan Majercik had two hits in four at bats for the Tigers. Landi and Mercado each went 2-for-4 as well for Western.
