AOL SPIRIT OF AMERICA
America Online Members Capture the Spirit of America -- in Pictures Enhanced Picture Sharing Features in AOL 9.0 Optimized Will Offer AOL Members More Ways to Tell Their Stories in Photos July 2003 (Newstream) -- Summer is the season for pictures, and on July 1, America Online, Inc. (NYSE:AOL), the world's leading interactive services company, announced the launch of "American Album," an initiative to create the largest online photo album ever. Drawing from the creative resources of more than 34 million AOL members, "American Album" will chronicle the varying American experience as seen from different parts of the country. Throughout the summer-long series, AOL members are invited to submit their favorite pictures, via AOL Keyword: American Album, that showcase a slice of America, whether it's a summer sunset, cornfields, a baseball game, kids eating ice cream or their friends and family. The first theme will be "Roadside America," which will feature photos from along America's highways and byways. Digital photography is gaining ground in popularity as more people are using digital cameras to preserve memories and share favorite images with others online. More than 10 million photos are shared on the AOL service each day, and in the last six months, more than 2.1 million online photo albums have been created through AOL's You've Got Pictures® service. AOL's "American Album" gallery paves the way for an enhanced digital picture sharing experience in AOL® 9.0 Optimized, the latest version of the AOL and AOL® for Broadband services that will be made available to AOL members first through an exclusive preview later this summer. AOL 9.0 Optimized will offer a simple, integrated digital picture sharing experience throughout the AOL service. Once a digital picture has been uploaded by a member through AOL's Picture Finder, it will be stored in their personal online archive so that they can share or post that picture again on the AOL service with just one click. For example, the same, easy approach used to share embedded pictures in AOL Mail today will also be used to create customized online albums, to send pictures through instant messages, to include in an online profile in AOL's Member Directory and to add to an AOL® Journal (blog). "American Album is among AOL's most ambitious efforts yet to enable AOL members to tell their stories and to share photographs of their lives with other members online. It's further proof that digital picture sharing on AOL is exploding in popularity," said Michael Sherrod, vice president and general manager of community and network integration, AOL. "The enhanced features included with the upcoming launch of AOL 9.0 Optimized will make it easier and more fun than ever to share digital pictures with friends and family all over the world. Close to half of all digital camera owners are AOL members, so not surprisingly, the initial response to American Album has been very positive." The first American Album gallery, "Roadside America," will feature unique photos that capture the American spirit and local flavor. Current photos include a shot of bales of hay painted with the American flag, a carnival, a rusted out car filled with flowers, shots of the desert and rows of vibrant flowers near a farm. Subsequent galleries will feature all-American summer themes such as reunions, family vacations, the glory of children in summer, hot Texas BBQs, cool Minnesota picnics, and carnivals at Coney Island. Members are invited to visit AOL Keyword: American Album to submit their photos or to vote for their favorite photos submitted by other members.
