Popular Classic Film Festival is Back, Bringing Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis, Clark Gable and Lana Turner to the National Mall

Festival Kicks Off With CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF

May 2003 (Newstream) --

WHAT: Washingtonians will gather on the National Mall to kick off the 5th Annual Screen on the Green film festival when HBO and AOL bring the hit classic, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF to the Nation's Capital on July 14, 2003. The free outdoor festival will continue with screenings each Monday evening at sunset through August 11.

About the film: Down Mississippi way, the wealthy Pollit family is a feudin' and a fightin.' The patriarch, Big Daddy (Burl Ives), is dying, though grasping in-laws are more concerned with his Last Will than his well-being. Son Brick (Paul Newman) has more pressing problems. He would rather swill whisky than pay attention to his frustrated wife Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor). Sizzling performances dominate, with confabulation (that's Southern for small talk) courtesy of Mr. Tennessee Williams. (1958) 108 Min.

WHEN: Monday, July 14, 2003, at sunset.
Films will continue to run every Monday through August 11, 2002.

WHERE: Each film will be shown on a giant 20' x 40' outdoor screen on The National Mall between 4th and 7th Streets (NOTE: Change of location from last year).

WHO: Everyone is invited. Screen on the Green is free and open to the public.

Film Schedule:

July 14: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF(1958) -- Thrilling performances by Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, and Burl Ives make this adaptation of Tennessee Williams' story about a wealthy plantation owner succumbing to cancer, one of the most acclaimed movies in history.

July 21: THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1946) -- Handsome drifter John Garfield and bottle-blonde Lana Turner team up to do away with her dull hubby.

July 28: MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1935) -- Clark Gable and Charles Laughton, as noble Fletcher Christian and loathsome Captain Bligh, do fierce battle on a cruise to Tahiti.

August 4: JAILHOUSE ROCK (1957) -- Elvis Presley is simple, misunderstood hero Vince, jailed on a manslaughter charge. While behind bars, the good 'ol boy perfects his singing, guitar picking and hip swiveling

August 11: 2001: SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) -- Stanley Kubrick's big, beautiful trip to the unknown is not only one giant step for mankind, but one for Hollywood sci-fi movies.

Special thanks to Warner Bros. Studios for providing these films.
