Dido's LIFE FOR RENT Earns Top 5 Soundscan Entry, as #1 Debuts Pour in Worldwide!
October 2003 (Newstream) -- Arista recording artist Dido has splashed down on both sides of the Atlantic with worldwide chart-topping debuts for her long-awaited second album, LIFE FOR RENT, it was announced today by Antonio "L.A." Reid, president and CEO, Arista Records. With first-week U.S. sales of 191,578 copies, LIFE FOR RENT (in-store Sept. 30th) enters Soundscan's Top Current Albums chart at #4, while making impressive entries on the Top Internet chart (#1), Current Alternative (#2), Alternative Core Stores (#2), Top Album Retailers (#3), and Top Album Mass Merchants chart (#4). LIFE FOR RENT is boosted by the success of "White Flag," its first single, top 10 this week on Billboard's Adult Top 40 and Modern AC charts (and "instant contender for best single of the year," Performing Songwriter magazine raved). Album shipments have already surpassed the half-million mark in the U.S., quickly outpacing the track record of No Angel, Dido's 1999 debut album - which has jumped more than 60 points up the Catalog Chart (to #20) over the past month. In Dido's native U.K., where first-week album sales exceeded 400,000 units and shipments exceed one million, LIFE FOR RENT debuted on the national chart at #1. Around the world, the album scored #1 debuts in France, Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland, South Africa, Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Thailand; with Italy, New Zealand and Holland reporting #2 entries, Germany and Austria at #3, and Norway at #5. "Dido's global fan base has developed into one of the most extremely loyal followings in all of popular music," said Mr. Reid. "She is not only a quintessential songwriter but also that rare artist who transcends genres and musical categories, as witnessed by the many radio formats that have embraced 'White Flag' since its release. I salute the Arista and BMG staff in the U.S. and around the world who contributed to making this week's album debuts a dream come true." Across the board, critical praise for LIFE FOR RENT has been unanimous, including 3-star reviews from Rolling Stone (who noted the album "has its own kind of integrity...[and] packs meatier emotional complications than its predecessor") and USA Today ("Dido projects an understated warmth that...lends human yearning to the ethereal verses and shimmering choruses"). Last Monday (Sept. 29th), Dido celebrated the release of LIFE FOR RENT with personal appearances at Virgin Megastores on the same day in London (in the morning) and New York City (in the afternoon), followed by The Late Show with David Letterman. The New York Times feature review that same day observed that the album's songs "revolve around love that won't let go... Dido's voice sounds mournful, steeped in the melancholy where trip-hop meets British folk songs." Dido went on to log appearances on Good Morning America, Live with Regis & Kelly, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn and the brand new talk shows, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Sharon Osbourne Show.
