Gregory Peck earned his fifth (and final) Oscar® nomination and his first Oscar for his leading role as lawyer Atticus Finch in 1962 Best Picture nominee "To Kill a Mockingbird." Also pictured is Brock Peters as Tom Robinson, the defendant accused of raping a white woman.


Beverly Hills, CA – The 1962 Best Picture nominee “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be screened as the next installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Great To Be Nominated, Part Three.” The film, based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, will be shown on Monday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Told through the eyes of six-year-old Scout, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is the story of an Alabama attorney who agrees to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman. The film earned three Oscars®, including the only competitive Academy Award won by Gregory Peck (after four previous nominations), for his lead performance as lawyer Atticus Finch. “To Kill a Mockingbird” also took home the Oscars for Art Direction – Black-and-White (Art Direction: Alexander Golitzen, Henry Bumstead; Set Decoration: Oliver Emert) and Writing – Screenplay based on material from another medium (Horton Foote). Directed by Robert Mulligan, the film received an additional five nominations, including Best Picture (Alan J. Pakula, Producer), Actress in a Supporting Role (Mary Badham, as Scout), Cinematography – Black-and-White (Russell Harlan), Directing (Mulligan) and Music Score – substantially original (Elmer Bernstein).

Oscar-winning art director Henry Bumstead and Badham will attend the screening and participate in a panel discussion.

The evening’s commemorative program will feature black-and-white photos from “To Kill a Mockingbird” on the cover.

Passes for “Great To Be Nominated, Part Three” are still available at a cost of $30 for film buffs wishing to see the rest of the series. A $5 discount is available for those who wish to renew their passes from Parts One and/or Two of the series. Inclusive of “To Kill a Mockingbird” there are 16 screening dates remaining in Part Three.

Tickets for each individual screening may be purchased at a cost of $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, pending availability, on the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time for all features is 7:30 p.m. and pre-show elements will begin at 7 p.m. The Academy is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
