QUEER EYE

Queer Eye

Design Guru Thom Filicia of "Queer Eye" Provides Workspace Decorating Tips

August 2005 (Newstream) -- TV's home makeover craze highlights the benefits of a fresh decor, but what about those of us who spend most of our time at work? Small-businesses, in particular, are often too busy to worry about their outdated technology and surroundings. Thom Filicia, interior design specialist on the Emmy Award-nominated hit show "Queer Eye" says given all the amount of time people spend at the office, it's important to make your workplace inviting and comfortable. The decorator from the "Fab Five" has teamed up with Xerox Corporation and Entrepreneur magazine to make over the nation's "Most Deserving Small Business" - one not only in dire need of a makeover but one that gives back to its community as well.

In just two weeks time, the office of Sprecher Brewing Company outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was transformed from flat to fizzy. The maker of gourmet

sodas and microbrews is saying goodbye to dark paneling, grungy carpet and ugly chair and hello to colorful, creative and productive surroundings. Incorporating the Sprecher logo colors, the office now has light-yellow walls and red carpet that make the office brighter and livelier, complemented by softer overhead lighting and more natural light.

A successful, well-known brewing company, Sprecher was lacking an appropriate and functional setting for the company's executives. The design team created an executive suite area, complete with raised 12' ceilings, a conference room and three executive offices. Throughout the office, the design incorporates pieces of Sprecher's heritage and livelihood; vintage Milwaukee artwork adorns the walls, and bowls of malted barley decorate employees' desks.

Xerox outfitted the brewery with state-of-the-art printing and multifunction systems, software and computer monitors. The makeover also included stylish and professional office furniture from The HON Company.

Sprecher Brewing Company won the nationwide office makeover contest based on its outdated décor and technology as well as its charitable efforts. The small business, which produces gourmet sodas and microbrews, has donated thousands of dollars to children's charities as well as provided tens of thousands of dollars worth of products to non-profit organizations.
