2004 Person of The Year Tribute To Sting Raises A Record $3 Million Plus For Musicares® Foundation
February 2004 (Newstream) -- Recording Academy® and MusiCares® President Neil Portnow, Chairman/CEO of Sony Corporation of America and Honorary Chair of the MusiCares Foundation Howard Stringer, GRAMMY®-winning recording artist Sting, and Recording Academy Chairman Daniel Carlin gathered at Sony Pictures Studios on Feb. 6 to celebrate Sting's accomplishments as a musician, humanitarian and activist, and to present him with the MusiCares 2004 Person Of The Year award. The event - attended by celebrities and prominent music industry executives - grossed $3.2 million for MusiCares' Financial Assistance Program, which ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need. "Our Person Of The Year event honoring Sting was not only a spectacular evening with a great turnout and amazing entertainment, but surpassed last year's $3 million milestone," said Portnow. "We are so pleased that the unprecedented success of this event ensures that our MusiCares Foundation will continue to grow and provide assistance to more people than ever before." Established in 1989 by the Recording Academy, MusiCares provides a foundation of critical assistance for music people in times of need, while treating each case with integrity and confidentiality. MusiCares also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly impact the health and welfare of the music community.
